Limits

A fine day of easy angling enjoying the stunning Southern Baja coast abounding with fish and life. The group of veteran anglers on this annual eight day run are exemplary of the predominant long range mind set today. A universe away from long range beginnings, when the success of a trip was measured by the size of one’s pile at the conclusion, the vast majority of today’s anglers opt out of retention long before their legal limits are reached. Just about every angler nowadays recognizes that, depending on the size and species targeted, a full limit is not needed to deem the effort a success.

And anglers are not the only champions of this evolution. Captains and crews, once solely focused on reaching “the number” before ever considering catch and release, now fully support angler’s decisions to release and/or relax when their personal goals are reached. It’s a beautiful thing.

Today’s results were the perfect example of the above stated. A bounty of beautiful yellowtail and tuna resting prime in the RSW tanks the day passed in easy going fun, leisure, and good humor. Great variety fishing for coastal species was the action highlight while we plied the waters for “unicorn” exotics. While we came up short in quest of the long ball the yellowtail action in many zones infused the adrenaline element that beckons even sated anglers to the rail. And in the spirit of thoughts mentioned above it was a good day to be a yellowtail around Royal Star. While some of the bruisers won their freedom in scrappy battles most were pardoned for future generations to enjoy. Day’s end found us fast to the bottom in a stunning setting of scenic glory. Well fed, satisfied and happy all were well prepared for pending reality right around the corner. Looking like the second leg of uphill miles will be nautically earned all hunkered down no strangers to the occasional weightlessness soon to come…

Today’s image features our long time friend and veteran Royal Star angler Jeff “El Jefe” Cox with a beautiful yellowfin landed on the surface iron a few days back.
